The wind powered generator is going to be seen a lot more very soon as the science improves to help manufacturers reach an even broader audience. To make the most out of this technology, market forces will need to be brought to bear on several issues that are currently holding down a vast proliferation of these devices all over the country.
These are the areas where the wind powered generator will see improvement and the reasons why the market will expand in the near term…
Aerodynamics and blade design improvements – These enhancements to the current science will mainly lead to lower cut-in speeds. Cut-in speed is the wind velocity at which you can expect to start making some power from your wind powered generator. Right now only a relatively small percentage of the population can take advantage of wind energy because the average wind speeds over the course of a year are not high enough to support the economics of a project like this. The wind powered generator can easily deal with averages greater than 6 mph. But, if your wind speed happens to be much less than that, the home wind turbine will have a difficult time paying for itself in less than 10 years. This is enough to dissuade many homeowners from making the purchase in the first place so as the efficiencies of these devices improve, so will sales.
Aesthetic improvement – Many home wind turbines have looked purely functional and have very little aesthetic appeal. However, as more and more of these devices have come into the urban market, more pressure has been put on manufacturers to come up with devices that look more ornamental than just barebones functional.
Acceptance by local communities – There was a time when many local communities simply would not tolerate a discussion of having a wind turbine next door. As a matter of fact, the Kennedy family famously pushed back against a wind turbine farm that was slotted to be installed within their field of vision at their home in Massachusetts. This is not a liberal or conservative topic anymore but one in which many people come to grips with wind energy simply because of the fact that it’s become too expensive to purchase power created by large fossil fuel burning utilities anymore.
In conclusion, wind powered generator sales are getting stronger and will lead to economies of scale in production that will lead to still stronger sales. This can almost not happen rapidly enough. We do not have an alternate fuel to quickly switch to when the fossil fuels that we currently burn become too expensive.
